City come up short
Written by Bill McKenzie

HOPES of a huge final day turn round of fortunes fell flat as Berwick Rangers pipped City for the last Irn-Bru Third Division play-off place.

Elgin scraped a 3-2 win against bottom dogs East Stirling at Borough Briggs, but champions Rangers managed only a 1-0 victory over Berwick at Ibrox.

Those results left City and Berwick level on points, but the Wee Gers' better goal difference saw them edge out the Black and Whites.

The need for goals was reflected in Ross Jack's starting line-up, with full backs David Niven (suspended) and Paul McMullan replaced by strikers Stuart Leslie and Dennis Wyness.

The hopes were to press the visitors and keep the back door guarded, but lack of defensive cover was to prove costly in the opening half.

Jamie DUFF gave City the ideal start with a headed opener in 16 minutes, but Jamie GLAGOW hit back with the equaliser within a minute to stun the Black and Whites.

Top scorer Stuart LESLIE raised hopes again in 39 minutes as he fired City ahead, only for Paul QUINN to level matters two minutes from the interval.

City continued their search for much needed goals after the break, but their only reward was a late counter from substitute Ceiran McLEAN.

Elgin City – Malin, Morrison (McKinnon 80), Wyness, Crighton, Duff, Cameron, Gunn, Harkins (McLean 80), Leslie, Nicolson, Moore. Subs not used – Black, McMullan, Beveridge.

East Stirling – Gordon, Hamilton, Moffat, Maxwell, Greenhill, McGregor, Hunter, Jackson, Wright (Kelly 72), Glasgow (Anderson 87), Quinn (Benton 81). Subs not used – Hay, Gillespie.

City in last day nail-biter
Written by Bill McKenzie

CITY'S Irn-Bru Third Division play-off hopes won't be decided until next week's final game after a 1-1 draw at Stirling Albion.

With Berwick Rangers going down at home to Annan Athletic, City need to defeat visitors East Stirling with goals to spare and hope Berwick go down heavily to champions Rangers for an unlikely chance of pipping the Borderers on goal difference.

Montrose, also beaten today - on the same points as City but with an inferior goal difference – face a trip to Annan on a final day which could be a real nail-biter.

Suspended top scorer Stuart Leslie, was replaced by Craig Gunn, the only change to the side which started last week's home defeat by Berwick.

And it was last season's goal hero who fired City ahead in just 12 minutes, with GUNN slotting home a Paul Harkins pass.

Chances were at a premium after that and City held on to their advantage until the break. The Black and Whites restarted with Graeme Beveridge on for full back David Niven.

But it was the Binos who grabbed the next goal as Steve DAY swept home the equaliser in 57 minutes to put a damper on City's hopes of notching the points.

Both sides made changes as time ran out, but neither could find a winner to leave Elgin facing a tantalizing last game of the season.

Stirling Albion – Crawford, McGeachie (Johnston 76), Thom, Ashe (McCunnie 76), Davidson, Ferry, McClune, Day, Cunningham (Hamilton 73), White, Clark. Subs not used – Filler, Flood.

Elgin City – Malin, Niven (Beveridge 45), McMullan, Crighton, Duff, Cameron, Gunn, Morrison (Wyness 69), Harkins (McLean 69), Nicolson, Moore. Subs not used – Black, McKinnon.

City stay in hunt

CITY'S late bid for a play-off slot stayed on course as they grabbed a late winner for a 3-2 success against Irn-Bru Third Division rivals Montrose.

Elgin twice came from behind at Borough Briggs to keep their hopes alive before Paul Harkins stroked home a late spot-kick to seal the points.

Boss Ross Jack stuck with the same XI which started last week's draw at Annan, with the same five substitutes named on the bench.

A game City needed to win to keep alive their play-off hopes started badly for them as Terry MASSON was set up to fire the Gable Endies ahead in 28 minutes.

But the Black and Whites dragged themselves level before the interval, with left back Paul McMULLAN on hand to grab his first goal for City in 43 minutes.

The visitors, who had to replace Winter before the break, reappeared after half-time with Sandy Wood on for former City keeper John Gibson.

Montrose regained the lead through Scott JOHNSTON in 51 minutes, but Paul HARKINS hit a rasping equaliser 10 minutes later to again lift City's hopes.

And it was left to HARKINS to put the seal on a gutsy comeback as he converted a penalty in 88 minutes after Niven had been brought down in the box.

Elgin City – Malin, Niven, McMullan, Crighton, Duff, Cameron, Gunn, Harkins, Leslie Wyness 80), Morrison, Moore. Subs not used – Black, McKinnon, McLean, Beveridge.

Montrose - Gibson (S Wood 45), McNally, Campbell, Watson, Lunan, Young, Winter (McCord 45), Masson, Johnston, Boyle (McIntosh 82), G Wood. Subs not used - Gray, Crawford.

City hopes suffer blow
Written by Bill McKenzie

CITY'S late bid for a play-off place hit the buffers as Irn-Bru Third Division visitors and rivals Berwick Rangers notched a 2-1 victory.

The Black and Whites led through an early penalty, but the Borderers bounced back with two second half counters to solidify their top four slot.

Ladies Day at Borough Briggs saw manager Ross Jack make just one change from last week's win against Montrose, with Mark Nicolson returning from suspension to replace Craig Gunn.

City needed victory to jump right back into the play-off mix and they got off to a great start as Stuart LESLIE converted a penalty in seven minutes for his 18th goal of the season.

But the home side had keeper Malin and a touch of luck to thank for holding on to their lead after that.

Malin tipped over a net-bound McDonald shot in 12 minutes and then touched over a Janczyk header in 36 minutes as the Wee Gers chased the equaliser.

And Lavery was twice out of luck as half time approached, shaving the outside of the post and then seeing another effort hit the inside of the upright before being scrambled clear.

City survived an early second half penalty shout, but Berwick's pressure paid off in 65 minutes as Darren LAVERY crashed home McLaren's cross from the right for the leveller.

Berwick wrapped up a deserved victory in 75 minutes as Kevin McDONALD hooked home from close range and, despite a late surge by City, the visitors held on to open up a four point advantage over the Black and Whites.

Elgin City – Malin, Niven, McMullan (Wyness 76), Crighton, Duff, Cameron, Morrison (Beveridge 21), Harkins (Gunn 65), Leslie, Nicolson, Moore. Subs not used – Black, McKinnon.

Berwick Rangers – McCallum, Jacobs, Townsley, Janczyk, McLean, Gielty, McLaren (Dalziel 71), Currie, McDonald, Easton, Lavery (Morrison 78). Subs not used – McAldon, Addison, Carse.

Late blow for City
Written by Bill McKenzie
Saturday, 06 April 2013 16:14

CITY were denied a gritty victory as Irn-Bru Third Division hosts Annan Athletic snatched a stoppage time goal to earn a 2-2 draw.

A last minute goal from substitute Dennis Wyness looked to have sealed the points for Elgin at Galabank, but the home side grabbed an even later equaliser to leave the visitors still out of the play-off reckoning.

Ross Jack was forced to change his starting line-up for the first time in five games, with Gavin Morrison and Paul Harkins replacing injured pair Mark Nicolson and Paul Millar.

There was also a return for ex-Dons striker Dennis Wyness, on the subs bench after a lengthy lay-off, as City went in search of a third straight league win for the first time this season.

Moore tested Annan keeper Mitchell with an early effort, but for the most part there was little in the way of goalmouth action in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half was a different story though, with Annan grabbing the opener through Iain CHISHOLM in 69 minutes.

Gavin MORRISON hit the leveller in 77 minutes before substitute WYNESS poked home from close range for what looked like the winner.

But City's hopes of closing the gap on the top four were dashed in stoppage time as David HOPKIRK struck for a share of the spoils.

Annan Athletic – Mitchell, Chisholm, McNiff, Swinglehurst (Watson 71), McGowan, Sloan, Jardine, Chaplain, McKechnie, Daly, Hopkirk. Subs not used – Summersgill, Love, Monaghan, Donley.

Elgin City – Malin, Niven, McMullan (McKinnon 45), Crighton, Duff, Cameron, Gunn, Harkins (Wyness 79), Leslie, Morrison, Moore. Subs not used – Black, McLean, Beveridge.
