A goal in either half from Darren Shallicker and Craig Campbell gave Elgin the 3 points this afternoon and kept their play off ambitions alive at Borough Briggs. With the largest and most vocal crowd at BB this season supporting them, City knew that only a victory today would keep their play off hopes going for another week.
The match was only 4 minutes old when referee O'Reilly handed out his first yellow to Arbroath's Raeside for a block on Craig Campbell. Sutherlands resultant free kick was cleared easily by the away defence. This set the tone for the remainder of that half however as Elgin took the game to their opponents, trying to pick up their first victory against the East coast side. Craig Frizzell, who went onto pick up the man of the match award, showed some neat touches early on., forcing the ball out of Hill's arms early on but his shot was cleared for a corner. 5 minutes later he picked up a yellow card for diving in the box but he quickly went from saint to sinner with a great run into the left hand edge of the box, forcing his way past the Arbroath defence and his lobbed cross landed at the feet of Darren Shallicker who poked it in from close range. The remainder of the first half saw City continue to press without really creating a clear cut chance and in fact could consider themselves to be lucky to still be level as firstly Paul Kaczan had to clear the ball off the line after Ally Ridgers had rushed out his box to sweep an attack, and then just on half time from an Arbroath corner, Kenny Gilbert cleared the ball from under the bar. Half time 1 - 0 to City. Shallicker almost doubled City's lead right after the re start when he attempted an overhead kick onto Frizzells cross but just didn't connect. The next 20 minutes saw the game flow from end to end as both sides looked to get the next vital goal. Thankfully that came on 65 minutes for the City as Ross O'Donoghue's pass come shot was backheeled by Sutherland into the path of the onrushing Craig Campbell, and Cammy made no mistake coolly slotting the ball past Hill for 2 - 0. Despite this it was Arbroath who now looked more likely to score as they pressed hard to get back into the game. And they got their reward on 85 minutes when Paul Tosh, a second half sub, broke Elgin's offside trap, ran through and thumped the ball through Ridgers for 2 -1. He almost completed a great comeback for the away side when on 90 minutes he found himself in the box with the ball at his feet but his fierce shot was turned round the post by Ridgers.
