Irn-Bru Scottish 3rd Division result

Elgin City 3

Forfar Athletic 1

Cambell 46
Mackay 65, 75
Grehan 55

Following on from a presentation to David Hind on his 200th SFL game, both sides came out searching for the 3 points for different reasons. Forfar, struggling for so long at the bottom of the division, had put together a 4 game unbeaten run and must have been confident of continuing that good run of form against a home side desperate to maintain the push for a play off place but smarting after a 5 - 0 reverse in midweek.

Elgin set out that determination right from the off with only 3 minutes on the clock, a crunching but fair tackle from Kenny Gilbert resulted in Fotheringham going off to be replaced by Anton. Forfar had the best of the early minutes, forcing a number of corners which the City defence dealt with. However the defence was caught out after 15 minutes, Allan Dempsie's trailing adjudged by the referee to have caught the Forfar striker in the box. Ally Ridgers in the City goal became the early City hero with a fine diving save to his left, albeit it from poor kick. The rest of the first half was pretty even, with Elgin coming back into the game, Frizzell and Crooks showing well up front for the home side, and Grehan for Forfar constantly harrassing the Elgin rearguard. Half time 0 - 0.

City fans had barely had time to digest their pies when a Craig Campbell striker gave them the lead. After picking the ball up far out, he skipped passed two defenders before slipping the ball in the box to  Frizzell. His pass back was slightly behind Cammy but somehow he managed to wrap his right foot through the ball and send it way past Wood in the Forfar goal. Any thought that City might then go on to dominate the game were thrown into disarray on 55 minutes when Forfar struck back. A long ball from the half way line caught Niven out, and the onrushing Forfar player flew passed him, sending a low hard cross over the edge of the 6 yard box for Grehan to have the simplest touch to side foot it past Ridgers.

Robbie Williamson then made the first of his subs, Sutherland coming in for Crooks. City then started to turn the screw on their opponents with various players going close. However it took a second penalty to turn the game in Elgins favour. Frizzell was brought down after a great turn inside the box and up stepped Steven Mackay to place the ball past Wood for 2 -1. Two minutes later on 65 Cammy then had a chance to put the game beyond reach when his rocket shot thundered back off the bar. However that only delayed the 3rd goal by a few minutes and when it came it was worth waiting for. With Forfar pressing forward City had the pace with Sutherland and Frizzell up front, and so following a corner the ball was played to Sutherland. He drove forward then played a pass to Mackay rushing up on his left, and from the edge of the box, his delightful chip sailed passed and into the net.

The remaining 20 minutes passed with both sides going close, Forfars best chance coming on 90 minutes when Ally Ridgers tipped over a free kick on the edge of the box. So, another 3 points to Elgin, keeping the pressure on that play off spot. City have played better this season and lost, but another good home result for the Black and Whites.
