For the second week running, top scorer Darren Shallicker rescued vital play-off points for Elgin. After netting a last-gasp equaliser at Stenhousemuir, the RAF striker forced in the winner against a good Dumbarton side who made life very difficult for the home team.
Backed by their noisy travelling Apache Army, the Sons looked confident and Andy Geggan fired wide early on. Shallicker almost opened the scoring with a free kick which David Crawford tipped away on 17 minutes, but it wasn't long before a great goal gave City the lead. Ross O'Donoghue's 25 yard effort gave Crawford no chance as it dipped into the top corner.
Ally Ridgers kept his team ahead, saving well from Ryan Russell and also blocking a Geggan drive. And when Michael Moore missed a couple of good chances at the beginning of the second half, and Mark canning forced another good Ridgers stop on to the post, it looked like it wasn't going to be Dumbarton's day. But Moore struck on 70 minutes, squeezing a header in at the back post from a Hamilton cross.
Elgin knew a draw was no use to them, and promptly went on the attack to regain the lead. Shallicker came up with the goods, slipping a shot under Crawford after Zander Sutherland did all the hard work on the right. Sons must have felt hard done by and pushed for another equaliser but stout City defending kept them in the hunt for fourth place.
