ITP North of Scotland Cup Result:

Elgin City 0

Lossiemouth 0

Mark Smith with a headerElgin City were boosted before the game by the return of their four Ross County loansters for this game and it was one of those, Craig Frizzell, who very nearly created the opener after only four minutes.  Former Deveronvale midfielder Mark Smith came rampaging into the box to meet Frizzel's cross but his effort struck the bar.

There were a couple of goalmouth scrambles in the Lossie box but returning keeper Darren McConnachie came out with the ball on both occasions when it seemed certain an Elgin tow would turn the ball into the net. McConnachie did well again to keep Kevin Duigid's first time effort out as City pressed although it was the visitors who very nearly grabbed an opener just before the break.

A need counter attack saw Craig Morrison switch the play for Kyle Stewart who broke into the box.  From a tight angle he opted to zip the ball across the face of the goal but it was just out of the reach of centre forward Duncan Lamont

Shortly after the break rangy centre back Mark Nicholson, another loan player, broke forward and struck a 25 yard effort which Darren McConnachie did well to tip over the bar.

At the other end Lossie came within a lick of paint of taking the lead.  Craig Morrison took the ball past Hugh Dickson in the box and sidefooted it across Joe Malin but it struck the inside of the post and skidded back across the line before being cleared to safety.

Minutes later Mark Smith hit the crossbar for the second time.  This time coming over the top of defender Steven Dixon to loop a header onto the stanchion of post and crossbar.

There was drama when Lossiemouth were down to nine men due to two players lying injured in the box, incredibly the referee Graham Fraser naively played on in a move which could well have lead to a serious foul being committed by a Lossie man in order to stop the game.  Fortunately the City players eventually showed the common sense to knock the ball out of play preventing any serious repercussions.

Late on, with the game stretched Mark Smith had an effort which flew past the post then Martin Charlesworth lifted the ball over the bar when through on goals, despite having most of the target to aim for. With thanks to Steven Rattray and the excellent www.highlandleague.net website
