McLeod 14 |
Elgin pulled off one of their best performances this season against an in form Montrose side, flying high in 2nd place, taking all 3 points at a wet and windy Borough Briggs.
Following on from a minutes silence in memory of long time City supporter Jack Noble who recently passed away, the game started brightly with Elgin forcing a corner within the first 3 minutes. Both Rusty and Steven Black for Montrose traded shots over the crossbar before the away side applied some pressure and from their second corner in quick succession, McLeod rose above everyone else to knock a powerful header passed Ridgers.
The away side, who've picked up more points on their travels than at home, saw a fair bit of the ball for the next 10 minutes or so before Elgin struck back.
The often maligned Craig Campbell showed all of his strength and ability by going shoulder to shoulder with a Montrose defender, winning the ball and then a deft back heel took the ball into in the path of the on rushing Nicolson. He made the byline and his low hard cross came right at Martin Charlesworth's feet who slammed the ball in from close range. 26 minutes and 1 - 1.
Both sides then traded shots for the remainder of the half, Elgin probably wnt in feeling the luckier as twice Montrose had shots cleared off the line. However 45 minutes gone and it was still 1- 1.
The second half was a pretty even game with both sides coming close on numerous occasions, Ridgers having 2 good saves in the space of the first 5 minutes. Charlesworth had a chance to double his tally from the edgy of the box but his weak shot didn't trouble Peat. Ross O'Donoghue was having one of his best games for the club in the middle of the park, always there, always driving forward. And with the Elgin rearguard being well marshalled by Alan Dempsie, chances were always going to be hard to find.
The game looked as if it might end up in stalemate till the 79th minute when after a good run into the box by Sutherland, his pass to Martin Charlesworth took him passed the Montrose defence and his bulleted left foot shot left Peat with no chance. 2 -1 to City. The only downside was the yellow card he picked up for removing his top whilst rushing over to the City fans in the enclosure!
Montrose then made a couple of late substitutions to force the game but it was all to no avail. Elgin had good control of the ball, passing it and frustrating the away side. Sutherland should have made it 3 - 1 a minute before the end but his header from the edge of the just sneaked passed Peats left hand post.
