Irn-Bru Scottish 3rd Division result

Elgin City 2

Dumbarton 1
Smith 18
Frizzel 33
O'Byrne 80

Despite a rather nervy second half performance in front of 500 fans, Elgin City kept their recent unbeaten run going against their visitors from Dumbarton.

Twice rattling the Sons crossbar before taking the lead through a Mark Smith header from a Craig Campbell cross on 17 minutes, and a neat Craig Frizzell lob on 32, should have seen the home side cruise to victory against a lack lustre away side. However the footballing cliche of a game of two halves was never more evident here as City came out a changed side at half time, looking a shadow of the team from the first 45 minutes. Sons may consider themselves to be unlucky heading back down the road with no points from this game, but it's the confident City side who leapfrogged them into 5th place in the 3rd Division.

An unchanged team from the draw at Montrose lined up for a 'giving racism the red card' display at kick off time.

Soon Elgin were looking positive, and a free kick from the left by Sutherland was headed against the bar by Kaczan. Then Smith broke forward and shot from out side the area, again hitting the bar. A goal did arrive on 18 minutes, Smith rising to head Campbell's cross from the right. A crucial second goal followed, Shallicker chasing down the keeper and although Dumbarton got the ball out, it came only as far as Frizzel who lobbed in a cracker. A blunder by Dickson almost gave Sons one back but Henderson shot past.

Ten minutes into the second half Hind put Sutherland through but Crawford saved his shot. Then Campbell wasted a decent Dumbarton chance when Ridgers failed to gather a cross. Frizzel met a Sutherland cross midway through the second half but his header scraped the post. Then the visitors got one back, an overhead attempt falling for O'Byrne to head home. It wasn't pretty stuff in the closing minutes but Elgin managed to deny Dumbarton any more clear chances, and the resulting win put them up into fifth place with Shire losing against East Fife.
