Elgin City 2

Stenhousemuir 0
Shallicker 47
Martin 75

A fine performance ended 2007 in style for City as they beat an on-form Stenhousemuir for the second time this season. Front men Darren Shallicker and Willie Martin were the scoring heroes but on the day Elgin didn't have a bad player on display, such was their domination of this contest.

There was a minute's silence prior to kick off, marking the sad passing of councillor and long-serving fan Alastair Bisset plus another stalwart supporter and sponsor Ian Grant.

Robbie Williamson was without suspended skipper Hugh Dickson, flu victims Ross O'Donoghue and Davie Ross as well as Craig Campbell, who was away on a festive break. Mark Nicolson and Mark Smith returned from bans to come straight back into the starting eleven.

Although it took Elgin 15 minutes or so to get going, they began to show some attacking promise through Shallicker who skimmed the frame of the goal with a header.

Soon after Craig Frizzel, playing his last match as an on-loan player from Ross County, tested keeper Brown with a good drive and when Stenny failed to clear, Zander Sutherland took the ball and rifled it off the right hand post from 20 yards.

Ten minutes before half time Shally looked certain to score when he took down a clearance and beat his man, only to shoot over the bar. And when Martin squandered another chance before the break, you wondered whether it was going to be City's day as the half ended goalless.

However Shallicker managed to grab his eighth goal of the season just after the interval. Sutherland fired in a great ball from deep on the left and the big striker beat keeper Brown in the air to glance it into the net. The visitors did begin to threaten with some shots from outside the area but Ally Ridgers wasn't overworked, and Elgin duly went about the task of clinching the points with a second goal.

It arrived fifteen minutes from time, Allan Dempsie's free kick breaking off the bandaged Paul Kaczan - an earlier head knock victim - for Martin to smash home and celebrate in somersaulting style. Stenny were furious, claiming the ball had hit Kaczan's hand, and defender Gordon Lennon was shown a red card for his protests.
