thumb_20070929-s07.jpgA fight-back by the home side denied Elgin City all three points but to come away from Stranraer with a draw was a good result against possibly the best side we've played against this season.

Darren Shallicker made it six goals in three games with a stunning overhead kick to fire City into a 15th minute lead.  The goal was a landmark as it was City's 300th goal in 260 games in the SFL since they joined it in 2000.  Elgin’s previous SFL goalscoring milestone holders are Craig Tully, who scored the club’s 100th SFL goal in their 99th league game against Peterhead at Balmoor on March 8, 2003, and Hugh Dickson who netted the 200th league goal for the City against Albion Rovers on September 17, 2005, at Borough Briggs in Elgin’s 186th SFL fixture.

Mark Smith headed Elgin into a 2-0 lead six minutes before half-time, before Michael Mullen pulled one back a minute before the break.  A rash challenge by goalkeeper Ally Ridgers on the extremity of his box, which saw him booked, gifted Stranraer an equaliser from the spot just six minutes after the restart, Andy Gibson slotting home.

Elgin then went down to 10 men with 11 minutes left when Kenny Gilbert stepped in to protect Zander Sutherland after some rough treatment from the home side and received a second yellow card for comments to the referee, who had already awarded a free kick to City.

Ironically, Elgin went 3-2 ahead when Sutherland’s precise cross was headed home by Paul Kaczan. Just when it looked as if the Black and Whites would hold out, Stranraer were awarded a free kick outside the box and Mullen’s low shot went through a ruck of legs into the net.
