Despite the heroics of new signing Ally Ridgers, Elgin succumbed to a late winner against leaders East Fife. The home side competed well against the rampant Fifers but in the end their extra quality edged them through.
There were few talking points in the first half, with Mark Smith producing some positive play for City and the visitors strong at setpieces. Steven Tweed missed a headed chance while former Peterhead man Bobby Linn forced Ridgers to save with his legs midway through the half.
Ridgers, just signed on a permanent deal from Caley Thistle, could however do nothing to stop Kevin Fotheringham's fine free kick from crashing into the net on the stroke of half time. City looked positive in the second half and dominated for a fifteen minute spell with Smith forcing a good save from Willie McCulloch.
But East Fife looked dangerous and Craig O'Reilly cracked the post with a low drive and Paul Stewart thought he had made it 2-0 from Stevie Nicholas' pass, only for Ridgers to block defiantly. It signaled a swift counter attack by Elgin and Smith advanced to bury a powerful drive behind McCulloch for a great equaliser.
This goal fired up the visitors who had some unbelievable misses, midfielder Stewart the sole culprit. The home team let him stroll through on three occasions and on the last of those, he managed to get the better of Ridgers with a low side-footed effort into the net for the winner.
