Last gasp misery for City

CITY'S hopes of an Irn-Bru Second Division play-off final place were dashed at Cliftonhill as Albion Rovers snatched a dramatic aggregate victory.

With the dour tie looking to be heading for extra-time the Coatbridge side grabbed a late, late deflected goal to clinch a 2-0 win and end City's stuffy resistance.

Over the piece City will be ruing missed chances in the first leg, although Stuart Leslie passed up a great chance to cancel out Albion's second half opener when keeper Gaston blocked the midfielder's parting shot four minutes from time.

City boss Ross Jack named the same 11 which started the midweek 1-0 home win against Rovers, while the hosts made a whopping six changes to their line-up.

The City faithful turned out in big numbers for the clash, with around 300 backing the side on a near perfect day for football.

And the Black and Whites took the confidence they gained from the Borough Briggs victory into the second leg as they comfortably held the Second Division side at bay in the first half without creating any real chances for themselves.

But City's advantage from the first leg always looked a slender one and, while it took the home side over an hour to grab the aggregate equaliser, the loss of a second in 90 minutes was a real sickener for the Black and Whites and their big band of followers.

THE Elgin City Supporters Club bus for the second leg of the Irn-Bru Second Division play-off clash against Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill will be leaving from Borough Briggs at 10.00am on Saturday.

The cost for a seat is £15 and anyone interested in going should call the football club office (01343 551114) to make a booking. Payment up front for this trip is required.

Supporters' Club secretary James McKenzie has also revealed that, while the club are keen to hear from fans interested in going to the away leg of the final should City reach that stage, a change has been made to the original first leg date.

If City were to be away to Queen's Park first, that game will be staged on Tuesday, May 15. If it is Stranraer, the tie will be on Wednesday 16.

Anyone interested in going to that game should also contact the above number, when it is hoped a cost for the trip to either Hampden or Stair Park will be available.

CITY limbered up for the midweek play-off clash against Albion Rovers with an impressive 3-1 Irn-Bru Third Division victory over hosts Queen's Park.

Goals from Archie MacPhee, Jason Crooks and Jamie Duff secured the points ahead of Wednesday's first leg Borough Briggs tussle against Rovers.

The Coatbridge outfit, only promoted last season, finished their Second Division campaign with a 2-1 home defeat by relegated Stirling Albion to leave them facing a buoyant Ross Jack side in the play-off semis.

It was a much-changed City side which took the field against second place Queen's, with ever-present defender Mark Nicolson, midfielders Brian Cameron and Stuart Leslie and top scorer Craig Gunn sitting out the Hampden clash ahead of the big midweek encounter.

Jamie Duff was named as a substitute alongside Daniel Moore, who missed the last three games through injury, with Paul McMullan, Ross O'Donoghue, Graeme Beveridge and Jason Crooks back in the starting line-up.

Barry Wilson was also starting only his second game of the season, but the City player-assistant manager lasted just 15 minutes, with Lewis Halford, signed from Aylesbury United at the end of March, coming on for his debut.

By then, however, the Black and Whites had charged ahead through Archie MacPhee and they went on to open up a 3-0 lead before the Spiders grabbed a late consolation counter.

CITY take what could be a valuable 1-0 lead into Saturday's second leg of the Irn-Bru promotion play-off clash against Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill.

A 1,200 crowd turned out at Borough Briggs for City's historic encounter and an early second-half Paul Millar counter proved to be the winner over a 90 minutes the Black and Whites should have won by a bigger margin.

A bruising battle always looked on the cards against opponents City had more than a few tasty clashes with over the seasons and in a torrid opening spell the visitors went down to 10 men inside half an hour when Michael O'Byrne was shown a red card.

Elgin manager Ross Jack resorted to a more familiar formation to the one which started the win at Hampden against Queen's Park, with Jamie Duff, Mark Nicolson, Stuart Leslie, Brian Cameron, Craig Gunn and Daniel Moore returning to the starting line-up.

Archie MacPhee and Jason Crooks, both scorers against the Spiders, Graeme Beveridge, Ross O'Donoghue, Paul McMullan and the now retired Barry Wilson were the players to make way.

poty-2011-12CITY'S play-off clinching victory over Montrose provided the Black and White faithful with the perfect scenario to enter into the spirit for the annual Supporters' Club Player of the Year awards in the Social Club.

The players, management, guests and fans who packed the function suite were all still bathing in the afterglow of that afternoon's history-making win as deputy skipper David Niven collected the Supporters' Player of the Year trophy.

The Players' Player of the Year award went to Daniel Moore – named in the PFA Scotland Third Division team of the year - with midfield colleague Brian Cameron picking up the Young Player gong.

Manager Ross Jack paid tribute to all the players who had contributed to the achievement of reaching the play-offs and acknowledged the tremendous backing the team had received from the supporters throughout the season.

Chairman Graham Tatters acknowledged the superb job the management team of Ross and assistant Barry Wilson had done and made special mention of the many folk who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the club going.
