City dug in at Alloa but it wasn't enough as their lack of firepower up-front was exposed when they lost in the Co-operative Insurance Cup on Tuesday night.
Early on, Alloa's Francis Kelly had the first chance of the game when his 25-yard drive hit the bar after beating Ally Ridgers.
City hit back when David Hind's 12-yard attempt was deflected past the post.
Just after half an hour and the home side's Graeme Brown spurn a great chance when his 15-yard lob ended up in Ridgers' arms.
On the stroke of half-time, Ray Jellema pulled off a save to push Darren Shallicker's free kick over the bar.
Into the second period and Alloa had another chance when Jamie Stevenson was denied by Ally Ridgers. The inevitable happened in 71 minutes when City were stung by the Wasps.
Good play by Kyle Macaulay led to sub Andy Scott who gave Alloa the opener. The home side ended City's cup run when seven minutes later, when Kelly finished from six yards out.
