Elgin lost their first home game to Queens Park today at a very windy BB courtesy of a first half goal.
From a corner in 20 minutes, Douglas' inswinging kick appeared to be missed by everyone and nestled in the back of the net. It was no more than Queens deserved as, with a strong and vocal support behind them, they dominated the majority of the 1st half. Elgin were down to playing long balls out of defence but with the strong wind in their faces, these were easy prey for the back line of Queens who were never under any serious pressure. Home fans were calling for a penalty on 25 minutes as the ball struck the hand of a Queens player but it was a call of ball to hand from the ref, and nothing was given. David Niven showed what was required in the first half with great run just before half time but his low driven cross was cleared for a corner kick.
In the second half Elgin came out with a bit more passion in their play, as 2 more players were booked to add to the three in the first half. And it should have been 1 -1 on 46 minutes when after some good play between McDonald and Gunn, Edwards was played in with only the keeper to beat but his curling shot cleared the far post by centimetres. Elgin continued to press with the wind at their backs whilst Queens were using the pace of their front line to counter at every opportunity but it was only in the last 15 minutes or so that City finally put some decent chances together. Craig Gunn almost opened his City account with a great shot narrowly going over the bar on 80, and sub Kyle MacAulay's good run only came to a corner. On 82 minutes a free kick from the egde of the box dipped and hit the cross bar and on 90 minutes David Nivens great diving header from a Kaczan lay off was well saved by Black, a case of a mishit or scuffed header would have ended up in the back of the net.
So a disappointing end to City's first home game of the season but the signs are encouraging that be playing some good football on the deck, they will create and score. Whilst this result wont start to turn BB into the fortress that Ross Jack hopes it will become, the signs are that it will be a much harder place for teams to come and get a result from.
