Irn-Bru Scottish 3rd Division result

Albion Rovers 3

Elgin City 1

Stevenson (pen) 7
McLeod 71
Gemmell 81
  Frizzel 20

Elgin were unable to come away from Cliftonhill with a win as Albion Rovers took their chances despite not really threatening for the majority of the game.

Referee George Salmond thrust himself into the spotlight after 7 minutes, awarding the home side a questionable penalty despite no real appeals from any of the players, and even though Scott Bain went the right way Tony Stevenson's penalty found the back of the net.

After Albion's fortunate break, some individual brilliance saw Craig Frizzel almost equalise in the 18th minute, and he broke clean through on goal after beating several players, but his shot was saved by Derek Gaston.  Frizzel was not to be stopped however, and just two minutes later and, after a poor defensive header from Alan Benton, Friz took full advantage and fired the ball past the keeper.

Elgin kept Albion at bay for the rest of the first half, and despite some nervy moments when Michael McGowan's header hit the crossbar, there was no real danger of them falling behind again, and they could even have gone in at half time with the lead, with Frizzel coming close on two separate occasions.

As the teams came out for the second half, Elgin almost flew into the league straight away as Ross O'Donoghue's long free kick found Paul Kaczan, but the captain's header flashed inches wide of the post. Highly rated youngster Robert Love was then guilty of missing an easy chance for his team as he rounded the onrushing Bain, but the shot wasn't struck at all well and sailed well wide.

A couple of substitutions midway through the second half saw Albion take the lead, and after what looked like a foul on an Elgin player, the ball was hoofed forward and Paul McLeod's pace saw him beat Scott Bain to the ball and lash the ball home from the edge of the box. It was the boost Albion needed, and they then went on to get the killer third in the 81st minute, as John Gemmell rolled the ball under Bain to the delight of their fans.
