Fresh from the defeat against Arbroath at Gayfield, Elgin City turned in one of their best performances of the season to come from behind and claim the 3 points.
The first half saw both teams struggle to get out of first gear, but Elgin had a couple of good chances and Jason Crooks could have scored after 18 minutes, getting on the end of Brian Cameron's cross but shooting wide. Allan Dempsie caught keeper Darren Hill off guard with his long range free kick but Demo, wearing the captain's armband in place of the suspended Paul Kaczan, was unlucky with the 30 yarder.
With Elgin having the best of the chances in the first half, it was Arbroath that started strongest in the second half. Arbroath won a free kick about 30 yards out and Gavin Swankie's effort struck the bar and cannoned back out, leaving Keith Gibson to head in from close range. A lot of people thought that was Elgin's chance gone, but City picked themselves up and equalised in style just 10 minutes later. Back in the starting XI, Brian Cameron had put in a very good shift down the right and on 61 minutes he put in a dangerous cross that the Arbroath defence failed to deal with, and up popped Jason Crooks to fire the ball under the keeper.
Elgin weren't going to settle for just a point, though, and their second goal on 74 minutes was one of the best strikes you'll see this season. Jason Crooks put in a free kick from the left hand side and Mark Nicolson connected on the volley superbly, sending the ball flying into the top corner. He couldn't have caught it any better and it sparked mass celebrations in the Elgin camp. It took only 2 minutes for Elgin to get their 3rd – with substitute Craig Gunn playing a big part in setting up the goal. Having had his initial shot saved, Gunn then deceived the defence by slipping the ball through to Ross O'Donoghue who took a touch and slotted the ball beyond the keeper.
Arbroath weren't going to lie down and accept defeat though, and they made things interesting on 84 minutes when Adam Strachan scored a neat finish from a deep corner. With the referee taking his time in blowing his whistle, Elgin could, and probably should, have got a 4th but Craig Gunn was unable to find Jason Crooks who was in acres of space, instead going for goal himself.
