First-foot blues for City |

CITY slumped to third spot in the Irn-Bru Third Division table as Peterhead cruised to a 3-0 victory at Borough Briggs.
The Blue Toon first-footers, more street-wise and aggressive, were two up by the break and a third before the end wrapped up the points to leapfrog their out-of-sorts hosts.
Elgin, looking to kick-start their campaign after defeats by Rangers and Annan, had Joe Malin in goals in place of departed Dundee keeper John Gibson and defender Jamie Duff back after injury for the north derby.
But the Black and Whites were without Graeme Beveridge, Paul Harkins and Craig Gunn, whose brother Chris died suddenly and for whom a minutes’ silence was observed before the game.
After a below-par display at Annan, another big crowd turned out for the New Year clash to see if City could get their promotion challenge back on track, but it was the visitors who deservedly opened the scoring in 19 minutes.
Rory McAllister laid the ball into the path of David COX and the on-loan Alloa forward curled a 12 yard shot past Malin.
The Blue Toon, who looked a threat every time they attacked, went two ahead in 38 minutes when Ryan STRACHAN sent in a 35-yard free kick which floated over his waiting teammates and defenders and beat the despairing Malin.
City made a better fist of it after the interval, but the Buchan side always looked to be in control of affairs and they increased their lead in 75 minutes as Duff allowed a hopeful through ball to evade him and Robbie WINTERS snapped up the gift to seal the points.
All things considered, City got off lightly and their trip to face runaway leaders Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday will be giving manager Ross Jack reasons to be wary of more New Year blues.
Elgin City - Malin, Niven, McMullan illar 63), Crighton, Duff (McHardy 79), Cameron, Wyness (McLean 77), O’Donoghue, Leslie, Nicolson, Moore. Subs not used - Black, McLeod.
Peterhead - G Smith, Cowie, Noble, McCann, R Smith, Strachan, Cox (McGuire 69), Redman (Sharp 4), McAllister (Winters 69), Bavidge, McLaughlin. Subs not used - Jarvie, Tully.

A DEPLETED City side fell 15 points behind Irn-Bru Third Division leaders Rangers after going down 2-0 to Annan Athletic at Galabank.
The home side grabbed an early lead and wrapped up the points with a late penalty as on-loan Dundee keeper John Gibson played his final game in Elgin colours.
City were without Jamie Duff, Craig Gunn and Graeme Beveridge for the trip to the Borders, with Joe Malin, Gibson's emergency replacement, one of only four named substitutes.
Graeme Ramage fired Annan ahead in just 11 minutes and Scott Chaplain made sure the points stayed at home when he struck home a penalty in 80 minutes to put City on their guard for Wednesday's visit of Peterhead.
Annan Athletic – Mitchell, Swinglehurst, McGowan, Steele, Love (McKechnie 65), Blake, Monaghan, Jardine, Chaplain, Ramage (Daly 45), Donely (Sloan 59). Subs not used – Summersgill, Thorburn.
Elgin City – Gibson, Niven, McMullan (McHardy 82), Crighton, Nicolson, Cameron, Harkins (McLean 45), O'Donoghue, Leslie, Wyness (Millar 76), Moore. Subs not used – Malin.

Elgin City and Grampian Police today issued a warning regarding roads congestion in the lead up to the rearranged fixture at Borough Briggs on Saturday 22 December 2012.
With this game being played on the final Saturday before Christmas, Elgin City Director Martyn Hunter stated, " Elgin town centre and the roads are sure to be far busier than normal and we would ask both sets of fans to arrive early at the game to allow entry by such a large crowd."
Match Commander, Superintendent Mark Cooper said, " Once again, we have been able to agree with the Management of Moray Leisure Centre which is next to the stadium and we are grateful for their support. There is limited car parking on Lossie Green and for fans arriving by car but we would ask that if local fans could walk that would assist potential congestion. Management from Elgin Academy on Morriston Road have also agreed to make their car park available for about cars to park there and fans can then walk down the cycle track towards the ground".
"I hope that this is a great event for Elgin City, their fans and also away support who will arrive in numbers. Again, the fans are encouraged to enjoy the occasion, but to behave responsibly for the enjoyment of all and to ensure that their Christmas gets off to the best possible start."
Fans are reminded that the Drinking of Alcohol in Public Spaces will be enforced on the day. Also fans will not be allowed to take umbrellas and large flags into the ground.

CITY were on the wrong end of a 6-2 rout at Borough Briggs as Rangers stretched their lead at the top of the Irn-Bru Third Division table.
The Black and Whites gave a spirited account of themselves in the first half, but two early goals after the break on a cold, blustery day knocked the stuffing out of Ross Jack's side.
The return from suspension of skipper David Niven offset the loss of Jamie Duff through injury, with on loan Ross County keeper Joe Malin on the bench.
Strikers Kevin Kyle and Dean Shiels were missing for the visitors, but the Light Blue fans in the packed ground were celebrating after just four minutes.
Andy LITTLE raced on to a through ball, skipped round Gibson and slotted home the opener to set the pace for a cracking first 45.
City's response was swift and sweet, with Daniel MOORE smashing a fierce 20-yard left foot shot past Alexander for the equaliser in 17 minutes.
But Rangers regained the lead seven minutes later as Templeton slipped over a simple pass for Andy LITTLE to slot home from three yards.
The action was fast and furious and City grabbed a second leveller in 30 minutes. Hegarty was booked for hauling down Niven on the edge of the box and Mark NICOLSON swept a delightful free kick high past Alexander.
Cameron passed up a great chance to fire City ahead, the midfielder driving a left foot shot straight at the keeper from 12 yards in 35 minutes.
Rangers skipper Lee McCULLOCH, restored to an attacking role, made City pay for slack marking in 40 minutes as he gathered a Little cross from the right to slam home from 10 yards to give the Glasgow side a deserved 3-2 interval lead.
Any hopes of another tit-for-tat second half were downed in 60 minutes as McCULLOCH fired a low shot wide of Gibson and four minutes later Lewis MACLEOD crashed an 18-yarder home to stretch Rangers' lead to 5-2.
Kyle HUTTON put the icing on the cake for the Ibrox side as he smashed home number six in 83 minutes for his first goal for the Light Blues.
City had the chance to reduce the defecit two minutes later after Hutton pulled down Leslie in the box, but Alexander dived to his left to push away Moore's spot kick.
Elgin City – Gibson, Niven, Harkins (McMullan 84), Crighton, Wyness (Beveridge 70), Cameron, Gunn (Millar 79), O'Donoghue, Leslie, Nicolson, Moore. Subs not used – Malin, McHardy.
Rangers – Alexander, Argyriou (Perry 45), Cribari, Hegarty, Wallace, McCulloch, Little, Hutton, Macleod (Sandaza 79), Templeton (Crawford 70), McKay. Subs not used – Currie, Naismith.
