CITY'S late bid for a play-off place hit the buffers as Irn-Bru Third Division visitors and rivals Berwick Rangers notched a 2-1 victory.
The Black and Whites led through an early penalty, but the Borderers bounced back with two second half counters to solidify their top four slot.
Ladies Day at Borough Briggs saw manager Ross Jack make just one change from last week's win against Montrose, with Mark Nicolson returning from suspension to replace Craig Gunn.
City needed victory to jump right back into the play-off mix and they got off to a great start as Stuart LESLIE converted a penalty in seven minutes for his 18th goal of the season.
But the home side had keeper Malin and a touch of luck to thank for holding on to their lead after that.
Malin tipped over a net-bound McDonald shot in 12 minutes and then touched over a Janczyk header in 36 minutes as the Wee Gers chased the equaliser.
And Lavery was twice out of luck as half time approached, shaving the outside of the post and then seeing another effort hit the inside of the upright before being scrambled clear.
City survived an early second half penalty shout, but Berwick's pressure paid off in 65 minutes as Darren LAVERY crashed home McLaren's cross from the right for the leveller.
Berwick wrapped up a deserved victory in 75 minutes as Kevin McDONALD hooked home from close range and, despite a late surge by City, the visitors held on to open up a four point advantage over the Black and Whites.
Elgin City – Malin, Niven, McMullan (Wyness 76), Crighton, Duff, Cameron, Morrison (Beveridge 21), Harkins (Gunn 65), Leslie, Nicolson, Moore. Subs not used – Black, McKinnon.
Berwick Rangers – McCallum, Jacobs, Townsley, Janczyk, McLean, Gielty, McLaren (Dalziel 71), Currie, McDonald, Easton, Lavery (Morrison 78). Subs not used – McAldon, Addison, Carse.

CITY'S late bid for a play-off slot stayed on course as they grabbed a late winner for a 3-2 success against Irn-Bru Third Division rivals Montrose.
Elgin twice came from behind at Borough Briggs to keep their hopes alive before Paul Harkins stroked home a late spot-kick to seal the points.
Boss Ross Jack stuck with the same XI which started last week's draw at Annan, with the same five substitutes named on the bench.
A game City needed to win to keep alive their play-off hopes started badly for them as Terry MASSON was set up to fire the Gable Endies ahead in 28 minutes.
But the Black and Whites dragged themselves level before the interval, with left back Paul McMULLAN on hand to grab his first goal for City in 43 minutes.
The visitors, who had to replace Winter before the break, reappeared after half-time with Sandy Wood on for former City keeper John Gibson.
Montrose regained the lead through Scott JOHNSTON in 51 minutes, but Paul HARKINS hit a rasping equaliser 10 minutes later to again lift City's hopes.
And it was left to HARKINS to put the seal on a gutsy comeback as he converted a penalty in 88 minutes after Niven had been brought down in the box.
Elgin City – Malin, Niven, McMullan, Crighton, Duff, Cameron, Gunn, Harkins, Leslie Wyness 80), Morrison, Moore. Subs not used – Black, McKinnon, McLean, Beveridge.
Montrose - Gibson (S Wood 45), McNally, Campbell, Watson, Lunan, Young, Winter (McCord 45), Masson, Johnston, Boyle (McIntosh 82), G Wood. Subs not used - Gray, Crawford.

CITY came from behind to notch a 4-2 win against Clyde at Borough Briggs to keep alive their Irn-Bru Third Division play-off hopes.
After falling behind, Ross Jack's side responded with a four-goal response to set up what could be a stirring charge for another top four place.
It was same team and subs yet again for City as they looked to build on Saturday's victory at Queen's Park in the rearranged clash against the Bully Wee.
But City, making a late bid for a top four place, were dealt a blow in 23 minutes as Kieran McGACHIE headed the visitors ahead.
Clyde's lead was short-lived, however, with Paul MILLAR levelling matters with a header on the half hour mark.
The Black and Whites turned things around after the break as Craig GUNN in 54 minutes and an Iain GRAY own goal three minutes later opened up a two-goal advantage.
A second header from MILLAR made it 4-1 for the home side in 75 minutes before McGACHIE grabbed his double in 82 minutes to give Clyde some hope for the short remainder of the game.
Elgin City – Malin, Niven (Harkins 77), McMullan, Crighton, Duff, Cameron, Gunn, Millar, Leslie (Beveridge 80), Nicolson, Moore (Morrison 78). Subs not used – Black, McLean.
Clyde – Barclay, Scullion, Gray, Fordyce, McDonald, Hay, Nicoll, Fitzharris, Sweeney, McCusker (McCluskey 65), McGachie. Subs not used – Rajovic, Lyden, Sloss, Watt.

CITY were denied a gritty victory as Irn-Bru Third Division hosts Annan Athletic snatched a stoppage time goal to earn a 2-2 draw.
A last minute goal from substitute Dennis Wyness looked to have sealed the points for Elgin at Galabank, but the home side grabbed an even later equaliser to leave the visitors still out of the play-off reckoning.
Ross Jack was forced to change his starting line-up for the first time in five games, with Gavin Morrison and Paul Harkins replacing injured pair Mark Nicolson and Paul Millar.
There was also a return for ex-Dons striker Dennis Wyness, on the subs bench after a lengthy lay-off, as City went in search of a third straight league win for the first time this season.
Moore tested Annan keeper Mitchell with an early effort, but for the most part there was little in the way of goalmouth action in the opening 45 minutes.
The second half was a different story though, with Annan grabbing the opener through Iain CHISHOLM in 69 minutes.
Gavin MORRISON hit the leveller in 77 minutes before substitute WYNESS poked home from close range for what looked like the winner.
But City's hopes of closing the gap on the top four were dashed in stoppage time as David HOPKIRK struck for a share of the spoils.
Annan Athletic – Mitchell, Chisholm, McNiff, Swinglehurst (Watson 71), McGowan, Sloan, Jardine, Chaplain, McKechnie, Daly, Hopkirk. Subs not used – Summersgill, Love, Monaghan, Donley.
Elgin City – Malin, Niven, McMullan (McKinnon 45), Crighton, Duff, Cameron, Gunn, Harkins (Wyness 79), Leslie, Morrison, Moore. Subs not used – Black, McLean, Beveridge.

A SECOND half penalty from Stuart Leslie wrapped up a hard-earned Irn-Bru Third Division win for City against Queen's Park at Hampden.
The victory also had them dancing in the streets of Govan as Rangers, held to a goalless draw at Montrose, were crowned champions with games to spare.
Manager Ross Jack was able to name the same starting XI for the third game running, which meant injury doubt Daniel Moore was given the all-clear.
Elgin started brightly and Neil Parry had to look lively to touch over a Craig Gunn shot inside the first minute, but chances were few and far between after that as the opening half ended goalless.
But the game swung City's way 11 minutes after the break when Brough brought down Paul Millar in the box to concede a penalty.
The Queen's defender was booked and needed treatment before Stuart LESLIE stroked home the spot-kick to fire the visitors ahead.
The home side made a double substitution in 64 minutes but it was City who almost doubled their lead moments later as a well-struck Cameron shot flew just wide.
The Spiders, needing victory to stop Rangers clinching the title today, pushed hard to get themselves back into the game, but City held on for a first win the season against their hosts.
Queen's Park – Parry, Gallacher, Brough, Bradley, Robertson, McParland, Anderson, Connolly (Davison 64), Longworth, Spittal, Shankland (Quinn 64). Subs not used – Lochead, Gibson, Capuano.
Elgin City – Malin, Niven, McMullan Harkins 84), Crighton, Duff, Cameron, Gunn, Millar, Leslie, Nicolson, Moore (Morrison 69). Subs not used – Black, McLean, Beveridge.
